The Library as ‘Third Place’

Libraries often serve as a ‘Third Place’ for students, not the classroom, not where they live, but the spaces where they spend their in-between time. Library space design and renovation should account for the varied needs of students throughout their daily lives. This Flash Talk will highlight library space design and renovation at Purdue University and the University of Oxford.

Hal Kirkwood is the Bodleian Business Librarian at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, where he has served since 2018. Previously, he was an Associate Professor at Purdue University’s Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics. Known for his expertise in business information literacy and entrepreneurship, Hal Kirkwood has significantly contributed to the field through extensive editorial and publication work, including “Strauss’s Handbook of Business Information.” His achievements include receiving the BRASS Excellence in Business Librarianship Award from the American Library Association and serving as the President of the Special Libraries Association in 2019, underscoring his leadership and impact in business librarianship​.
