Redefining Libraries: From Traditional to Multifunctional Spaces

Tuesday, June 25, 12:05, RB 209 [back to full program]

The Municipal Library of Prague is the biggest library network in the Czech Republic. There are 46 branches in the network in 16 Prague districts. The Library rules and system are the same following the claim “one library, one card”, but each branch is specific. It is focusing on place and community, mainly in activities and space for people and its equipment. Balancing these two aspects (global x local) in the Library Strategy or in everyday life is hard work. Not only fully successful sometimes. Therefore, every small (or big) success is a joy.

Tomáš Řehák started his career in the Municipal Library of Prague in 90s as a specialist for automatization of library processes. He became the director of the Library in the year 2002 and he has already defended his position twice. The Library has changed its role from a place for borrowing books to a public service that offers culture, education and space for everyone during this time. He stands behind the visionaire ideas which are shifting Czech librarianship, e.g. ROI, central cataloguing of Czech fiction  (the CENTRAL project) or web portal Knihovny.cz.
