From Traditional Reading Rooms to Flexible Learning Environments

In recent years, the University Library Mannheim has replaced some traditional reading rooms with innovative learning spaces to support creative, focused and collaborative learning. The presentation at the EBSLG conference will illustrate the transition from traditional reading rooms to flexible learning environments. It will focus on introducing the newest learning spaces of Mannheim University Library: ExpLab, Leisesaal (Silent Hall) and Learning Center. These new and redesigned spaces collectively aim to foster a conducive learning environment that meets the evolving demands of students.
The ExpLab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including an eye-tracking station, VR headsets, and design thinking tools. This flexible space features adjustable seating, movable tables, a large whiteboard, and a mobile partition with an integrated touchscreen, making it ideal for group work, experiments, and academic projects.
The Leisesaal (Silent Hall) is developed through design thinking methods in collaboration with students. This space is dedicated to focused study, offering desk workstations, work lounges, and soundproof cubes, along with a chill-out zone for relaxation between study sessions. This room aims to enhance the overall study experience by catering to diverse student needs.
The Learning Center, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, continues to serve as a hub for group work. It provides 180 modern workstations, each equipped with monitors to facilitate teamwork.
